Akil is a visual artist whose work spans acrylic and oil painting, graphite, colored pencil, oil pastel, and silhouette imagery. Guided by conviction, faith, and resilience, he creates portraits and symbolic works that challenge perceptions of justice, mercy, and mass incarceration while inviting viewers to see the humanity beyond a person's worst moment.

Working from both reference materials and moments of inspiration, Akil creates art that encourages curiosity, reflection, and personal connection. Whether portraying historical figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or exploring silhouette compositions that allow viewers to see themselves within the work, his practice is rooted in the belief that art can inspire compassion, conversation, and transformation.

Artist statement

I create with acrylic and oil paint, graphite, colored pencil, oil pastel, and silhouette imagery because each medium offers endless possibilities for expression. My work is driven by conviction, passion, and a desire to challenge the ways society often views justice without mercy, particularly when it comes to mass incarceration and the lack of concern for rehabilitation.

Many of my works begin with a reference image, while others emerge from inspiration in the moment. I am especially drawn to silhouette imagery because it allows viewers to bring their own experiences into the work. Rather than telling people exactly what to see, I invite them to discover their own connection.

My portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King reflects my admiration for Dr. King's willingness to stand for others without resorting to violence. Across all of my work, I hope viewers are left with curiosity, reflection, and a deeper understanding of the people behind the images.

My artistic practice has taught me to approach both art and life with patience. Instead of making excuses for circumstances or limitations, I make the necessary adjustments to create the strongest work I can with what I have. My work is a combination of resilience and raw passion, shaped by gratitude for how God has transformed my own story. More than anything, I want to be known for more than the worst moment of my life, and I hope my work encourages others to extend that same grace to those around them.
