Founding member

Gwendolyn Garth is an Artivist, multimedia social practice artist, and creative journaler. A founding member of the Returning Artists Guild, her work begins in her journals and expands into mixed media artworks that blend words, images, and lived experience. Through traditional and digital media, she explores healing, recovery, resilience, and transformation while challenging assumptions about what art can be and who it is for. Her work encourages healing from the impacts of incarceration, substance use, trauma, and racism through creative practice and placemaking.

Artist statement

I am an Artivist, multimedia social practice artist, and creative journaler whose work begins in my journals and grows into mixed media artworks that blend words, images, and lived experiences. Through these layered visual narratives, I investigate the unlimited possibilities of art making while exploring healing and recovery. By bringing my ideas off the page and into the world, I use traditional and digital media to challenge assumptions about what art can be and who it is for. My mission is to encourage others toward overcoming darkness and defying stereotypes, using art and creative placemaking as tools for healing from the impacts of incarceration, substance abuse, trauma, and racism. Drawing from my own transformation and a belief that to live well is an art form, I create work that celebrates resilience and the possibility of change.
