Robert T. Porter IV, professionally known as Rob Banks, is a Youngstown, Ohio-based musician, songwriter, writer, and multidisciplinary storyteller whose work explores redemption, resilience, hope, and the complexities of rebuilding after incarceration. A self-described five-time recidivist, Rob draws from lived experience to create music and writing that challenge conventional narratives about failure, healing, and second chances.

His creative practice spans multiple disciplines, including music, writing, digital art, and film, though music remains at the heart of his work. He is currently completing Prisneyland, a book that examines the hidden patterns contributing to recidivism while offering practical insights for lasting transformation. Through every project, Rob seeks to create honest, emotionally resonant work that encourages people to believe their past does not have to determine their future.

Artist statement

Music found me when I was twelve years old. After attending my first concert, I cried until someone bought me a guitar. Since then, every season of my life—including incarceration, recovery, and reentry—has given me a new understanding of why art matters and what it can do.

I create music, writing, and other forms of storytelling that explore redemption, hope, relationships, emotional struggle, and the reality of rebuilding a life after adversity. I don't limit myself to one genre because every story demands its own sound and its own approach. My process is intentional and patient. I constantly collect ideas, and when it's time to create, I follow the one that speaks to me in that moment. Some songs take days to write; others have taken decades.

More than anything, I want people to feel something. If a song gives someone hope, helps them process pain, or reminds them they are not alone, then I've done my job. I don't create for fame or luxury. Having spent much of my life with very little, I know what truly matters. I create because I believe art can restore hope, help people overcome their struggles, and remind us that redemption is always possible.
