In May 2021, Columbus Monthly profiled Aimee Wissman and the newly established Returning Artists Guild, which Wissman co-founded with Kamisha Thomas to help justice-impacted artists build sustainable creative careers.
The story grew out of the Ohio Prison Arts Connection’s Onto Life’s Pages poster project, which commissioned six returning artists and directed sales proceeds to the artists. But it also offered an early look at the RAG’s emerging mission: helping artists develop professional statements, set goals, pursue funding, build networks and take ownership of how and when their stories are shared.
“Mainly, we’re working on reshaping the narrative of who is incarcerated and why, and finding community support for ourselves,” Wissman told the magazine.
