The Brooklyn Rail Highlights RAG Co-Founder Aimee Wissman in Marking Time
The Brooklyn Rail examines work by RAG co-founder Aimee Wissman in its review of Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration, a landmark exhibition at MoMA PS1 featuring more than 35 artists examining the carceral system through contemporary art.
RAG co-founder Aimee Wissman’s work was among that of more than 35 artists featured in Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration at MoMA PS1 in New York. Curated by scholar Nicole R. Fleetwood, the exhibition brought work created within and around incarceration into a major contemporary art institution and examined its significance to American art and culture.
In its March 2021 review, *The Brooklyn Rail specifically considers Wissman’s Prison Postcards, work she created while incarcerated. Critic Darla Migan points to Your Appeal Is Denied, which responds to the addition of 74 days to Wissman’s sentence, as part of the exhibition’s larger examination of confinement, punishment and resistance.
Later in the review, Migan returns to Wissman’s work while examining the systems and industries surrounding incarceration, citing Prison Postcard: Pick yer Poison or They Pick it 4 U alongside a broader critique of the carceral system.
The recognition places work by one of RAG’s co-founders within a national conversation about incarceration, contemporary art and the role artists directly impacted by the carceral system play in interpreting and challenging it.
