Home Free: Ohio Artists Envision Prison Abolition is a touring exhibition featuring work by currently and formerly incarcerated artists from across Ohio. The exhibition debuted at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton, Ohio, where it was on view from October 21, 2023, through January 5, 2024, before traveling to other venues.
Co-curated by Dr. Nicole R. Fleetwood, author of Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration, and the RAG co-founders Aimee Wissman and Kamisha Thomas, Home Free brings together a diverse range of work by artists directly impacted by the criminal legal system.
The exhibition explores the conditions, creative expression and artistic practices that emerge from experiences of incarceration, while challenging audiences to consider mass incarceration as a response to questions of safety, justice and rehabilitation. At the same time, Home Free celebrates the artists themselves: their talent, perspectives and contributions to contemporary art.
At the Fitton Center, the exhibition launched as both an artistic homecoming and a call for public conversation, inviting audiences to experience the work and think critically about the impact of incarceration on individuals, families and communities.
