I create art with the intention of opening dialogue for Black & Brown women on empowerment. The piece, Sitting, is to highlight the Black woman's ability to be confident, powerful, and the model for enlightenment. Black women have the innate strength/ability to awaken self & others (the bell in hand). The rocks underneath represent the (often) uncomfortable challenge presented between two poles of efforts in achieving that task. For example, throughout the piece, there is the softness of the body and rough rocks, stillness and movement, sun and water. It asks the question: what role do I play in the effort & remembrance of empowerment?
